Best Barefoot Shoes for the Gym

The Best Barefoot Shoe for the Gym (And Why It's Not What You'd Expect)

Most gym shoes are working against you. The thick cushioning that feels comfortable on the way to the gym is actually reducing your stability the moment you step under a bar, into a lunge, or onto one foot for a single-leg movement. Your foot can't feel the ground, so your brain can't stabilize your body the way it's designed to. AKA, you should not be lifting in a running shoe.

Barefoot shoes fix that.

Why your current gym shoes may be holding you back

When you squat, deadlift, or do any movement on your feet, your foot is the foundation. Every stabilizing signal your brain needs to fire the right muscles starts at the bottom of your foot, specifically, at the sensory receptors packed into your sole. A thick, cushioned gym shoe inhibits that signal

Here's what that creates in practice:

  • Reduced balance and proprioception during lifts
  • A forward-tilting posture from the elevated heel (most running shoes have a 10–12mm heel raise)
  • Toes crammed together, which limits the natural toe splay your foot uses to stabilize
  • Weaker foot and ankle muscles over time, since the shoe decreases activation

What to actually look for in a gym barefoot shoe

Not all minimalist shoes are built the same. For gym use specifically, here's what matters:

Zero-drop sole. This means the heel and toe are at the exact same height, just like standing barefoot. A zero-drop shoe puts your body in neutral alignment, which means your squat mechanics, your hip hinge, and your balance all work the way they're supposed to.

Thin, flexible sole. The closer your foot is to the ground, the more sensory feedback it gets. The Stimulus V2 has a 6mm sole: thin enough to actually feel the floor beneath you, flexible enough to let your foot move naturally through every rep.

Wide toe box. Your toes are supposed to splay when you load weight. That spread is part of how your foot creates a stable base. A shoe that pinches your toes together, especially the big toe, removes that mechanism entirely. The Stimulus V2 is shaped like an actual foot, not a tapered fashion silhouette.

A shoe you'll actually wear everywhere else. The best gym shoe is one you don't have to swap out of. The Stimulus V2 was designed to go from a training session to the coffee shop.

What our customers are saying about training in Minnemals

"I have been really impressed with my Minnemals. I have always used very elevated squishy shoes to work out in and then I was inspired to try your shoes. I have been using them for about a month now and I can do squats and lunges so much better with no pain as well as having greater range of motion and better balance."

"The shoes are amazing and have relieved pain in my knees and hips."

"I've slowly adopted to wearing them as my muscles adjust and strengthen to the barefoot design. It's proven to be a seamless transition and you can feel the difference in your feet."

A note on transitioning

If you've been training in heavily cushioned shoes for years, your feet will need time to adapt. Start by wearing the Stimulus V2 for shorter sessions and build up gradually. Your foot muscles, especially the small intrinsic ones, have been underused. They'll wake up, but give them a few weeks. Most people notice a real difference in their balance and stability within the first month.
