Frequently Asked Questions

Barefoot Shoes FAQ

Everything you've been wondering about barefoot shoes, answered by Delaney, a gait specialist and founder of Minnemals.

What are barefoot shoes?

Barefoot shoes are footwear designed to mimic the feeling of walking without shoes. They have three key features: a wide toe box that lets your toes spread naturally, a zero-drop sole (same height from heel to toe), and a thin flexible base that allows your feet to feel the ground. Unlike conventional shoes, they don't add arch support, cushioning, or heel elevation because your feet don't need them to do their job.

Are barefoot shoes good for plantar fasciitis?

For many people, yes! But the transition matters. Conventional shoes with thick cushioning can weaken the muscles that support your arch over time. Barefoot shoes encourage those muscles to activate again. Many customers tell us their plantar fasciitis symptoms improved significantly after switching, though results depend on the individual and how gradually you transition. See the Stimulus V2 β†’

How long does it take to transition to barefoot shoes?

Most people need 4–12 weeks to fully adapt. The key is to start slowly: wear them for 1–2 hours a day in week one, then gradually increase. Your feet, calves, and ankles are building strength they haven't needed in years. Rushing it is the #1 reason people give up or have discomfort.Β Read the full transition guide β†’

What's the difference between barefoot shoes and minimalist shoes?

Barefoot shoes are a subset of minimalist shoes. True barefoot shoes (like Minnemals) have zero drop, zero arch support, and a sole thin enough to feel the ground. Minimalist shoes vary may still have some heel lift or light cushioning. Minnemals are barefoot shoes, not just minimalist.

Can I wear barefoot shoes for lifting and CrossFit?

Yes, and many people find them better for lifting than traditional trainers. The flat zero-drop sole keeps your weight distributed evenly, which improves squat mechanics and ground contact. You lose the "squishy" base that destabilizes you during movement. The Stimulus V2 was designed for exactly this use case. Shop the Stimulus V2 β†’

Do barefoot shoes have arch support?

NO. And that's intentional! Arch support weakens the muscles that are supposed to hold your arch up naturally. The goal of barefoot footwear is to let those muscles do their job, which strengthens them over time. If you've been in highly supportive shoes for years, your arch muscles may need time to adapt. This is normal and expected.

Are Minnemals good for wide feet?

Yes. The Stimulus V2 has a wide toe box that's shaped like an actual foot, not the tapered shape most conventional shoes force your toes into. If you've struggled to find shoes that don't squeeze your toes, Minnemals are worth trying.

How do I size Minnemals shoes?

The Stimulus V2 fits true to size. If there's not a half size available (the larger sizes) they will run slightly big, so size down. Refer to our size chart on the product page. If you're still unsure, email us at info@minnemals.com and we'll help.

What are barefoot shoes made of?

The Stimulus V2 is made from rubber, vegan leather, and mesh. It's 100% vegan and cruelty-free.
